In Plymouth, coming soon, no more waiting in hallways to get into the Emergency Room.
Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital begins installation of a new addition–a prefabricated 25-bed observation unit to hold patients hospitalized for 24 hours or less, that are seen in the Emergency Room.
The hospital took delivery of the first 20 modular units on Monday, the 26th. Bobbi Clark has more.
Kevin Coughlin is President of Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Plymouth:
“Right now, all of the hospitals on the South Shore are suffering from long wait times in the Emergency Department both because we’re short of staff and because there aren’t enough beds for people to go and get that care.”
And, Coughlin says this is a way…
“…for us to add space for patients that need to be seen and observed so they don’t have to wait in a hallway. They’ll actually have a private bed and a room with a door and then we can take care of them appropriately.”
According to Coughlin, this is the second in a multi-phased capitol expansion project that Beth Israel Lahey is funding…
“…for us here in Plymouth. The first phase was we made an addition during the pandemic to the Emergency Department. This is the second component adding this 25-bed observation unit. “And the third component, which we have just undertaken, is we will be roughly doubling the size of our existing Emergency Room.”
