Five people were arrested after a stolen vehicle was found in Braintree and attempted to flee from police in the Blue Hills Cemetery.
On Thursday around 1 p.m., Braintree Police say officers noticed a stolen motor vehicle that was wanted after a carjacking in another community.
But the vehicle was driving as part of a funeral procession.
Rather than attempting to stop the vehicle, officers monitored the vehicle and asked for assistance. Officers and plainclothes detectives responded.
A plan was developed to stop the vehicle after services at the Blue Hills Cemetery. When officers tried to stop the vehicle, the driver took off.
Police blocked the exits, so the vehicle drove over the lawn, landscaping, and bushes on the West Street side. The car hit a large boulder, went airborne, and crashed onto West Street.
There were no other vehicles involved, and no other injuries.
Five people fled on foot, but were eventually arrested, thanks to mutual aid support from nearby communities. Braintree High School was ordered to briefly shelter-in-place.
Two juveniles were arrested — one was the driver of the vehicle.
21-year-old Melanie Lopes of Brockton was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and receiving a stolen vehicle.
21-year-old Avonte Taylor of Dorchester, and 20-year-old Giovannie Cordova of Boston are facing stolen vehicle charges.
