A senior at Whitman-Hanson High School was honored with the inaugural Maura Murray Scholarship.
The scholarship is presented to a student who demonstrates outstanding academic, and athletic achievement.
Murray has been missing since 2004, after her car crashed on Route 112 in Haverhill, New Hampshire. She was a nursing student at UMass-Amherst at the time.
Anne Tilley was surprised with the honor during a ceremony on Wednesday.
Maura’s older sister, and fellow alumna, Julie Murray, was among those in attendance.
Maura Murray, a tough and determined competitor, who graduated from the high school in 2000, was captain of the cross-county team.
She set multiple school records, and was a member of the National Honor Society.
Her father, Fred Murray, says this was a special way to continue Maura’s enduring legacy.
Julie Murray says awareness is key. Nearly two decades later, they have never stopped searching for answers.
The Murray family maintains a website where updates and events are frequently posted.
