The Whitman-Hanson Regional School District is warning past and present employees about a data breach.
District officials say they were subject to “an insolated ransomware attack” that occurred in July of last year.
As a result a third party was able to gain unauthorized access to past and present District employee data from on-site servers.
The District says they immediately notified local police, Massachusetts State Police, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security upon learning about the breach.
They also engaged forensic consultants to investigate the root of the incident, secure its systems, prevent this issue from reoccurring, and identify any sensitive or personal information that may have been breached.
Letters were sent out on January 6 to those who may have been impacted however, the District says they were unable to locate addresses for some individuals.
While there is reason to believe that personal information may have been accessed during this incident officials say there is no indication that personal information was extracted or used but that they are notifying employees out of an abundance of caution.
Two years of complimentary credit monitoring services is being provided through Experian to those who may have been impacted by this incident.
Anyone with questions can visit the District’s website for more information.
If you would like to determine whether you were potentially impacted, please call 781- 618-7000.
