Three Whitman residents were displaced, and a firefighter was transported to the hospital after a two-alarm fire in Whitman.
On Monday, around 12:15 p.m., Deputy Fire Chief Al Cunningham said they responded to Plymouth Street for a report of smoke coming from a home.
Arriving crews found heavy smoke in the basement, and a second alarm was struck as fire rapidly spread to the first floor.
The home was not occupied at the time of the fire, but a family pet, a ferret, did not survive.
A firefighter was transported to the hospital for treatment of heat exhaustion.
Mutual aid was provided by Hanson, Abington, East Bridgewater, Rockland, and Brockton. Ambulances from Norwell and Halifax responded to the scene. Bridgewater provided station coverage.
The home sustained “considerable damage,” and was determined to be uninhabitable. Three residents are being assisted by the Red Cross.
The Whitman Fire Department and State Fire Marshall’s Office determined the cause of the fire to be from an electrical cord that was submerged in water in the basement of the home.
