A man was arrested in Weymouth after multiple reports of driving the wrong way on Route 3 on Saturday.
State Police spokesman David Procopio says around 8 p.m., multiple calls reported a driver traveling southbound in the northbound lane.
The vehicle caused numerous crashes, and State Police from the Norwell, Bourne, South Boston, Milton barracks, along with numerous local police departments responded to locate the suspect vehicle.
At some point, the vehicle got onto Route 3 in the correct direction, but then turned around and traveled south in the northbound lane.
After causing multiple crashes with “unsuspecting, oncoming traffic,” the suspect crashed into the guardrail/median area on Route 3 in Weymouth.
Witnesses reported a male walking outside his vehicle with a knife, and responding patrols were notified. Troopers attempted to use a taser on the suspect, but to no avail. He threw the knife towards the woodline, and was taken into custody.
He was transported to South Shore Hospital for psychiatric evaluation.
Due to the suspect vehicle and numerous other crashes, two lanes of Route 3 were shut down, with just the breakdown lane getting by.
A name or charges was not immediately available.
