A man is charged with intentionally placing large rocks in a Kingston roadway, causing damage to vehicles.
Kingston Police say that since February of 2023, they have been investigating a series of large rocks/boulders being placed in the roadway on Pembroke St. (Rt. 27) in the area of Reed St.
This section of roadway is described as being heavily wooded and dark with no residences abutting the roadway and many vehicles struck these rocks causing ripped pit undercarriages, fluid spills, disabled vehicles, and even airbag deployments.
Police say they then began a surveillance operation where a detective, in full camouflage, positioned himself in the woods at approximately 10 p.m. Monday with a line of sight on the area of interest.
Shortly before midnight the detective saw a vehicle stop, open the tailgate, a rock that was left in the middle of the road, and the vehicle then pull onto Reed St.
Roughly ten minutes later investigators located a suspect on his porch, who admitted to driving the matching vehicle (still warm to the touch) and having just recently arrived home.
However, he denied stopping on Pembroke St.
The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Cameron Currier of Kingston, was taken into custody and charged with 11 counts of Malicious Damage to a Motor Vehicle and 9 counts of Attempt to Commit Crime: Malicious Damage to a Motor Vehicle.
Police say they believe that many drivers didn’t notice damage until later and thus didn’t report it to officials.
As a result they are asking anyone who may have hit a rock in the roadway of Rt. 27 in the vicinity of Reed St from February 2023 on to please contact Det. Lt. Michael Skowyra at 781-585-0523 ext. 6662 so they can determine if the incident is related to this case and seek charges/restitution through the courts.
