A Mattapan man is facing charges after allegedly striking a police cruiser and then fleeing the scene.
Randolph Police say that at approximately 8 p.m. Saturday an officer responded to the area of North Main St. to assist a vehicle that had run out of fuel.
While the officer was assisting the disabled vehicle, a 2014 black Jeep crossed over the double yellow line and struck the stopped cruiser.
The Jeep then fled the scene and continued driving northbound.
A second Randolph police officer arrived on scene and attempted to stop the vehicle, but a decision was made not to initiate a pursuit out of safety concerns and officers continued to assist the disabled vehicle.
Photo evidence was used to obtain the license plate number, and the suspect vehicle was quickly identified.
About a half hour later, the unoccupied vehicle was located near the registered owner’s residence in the area of Wellington Hill Street where detectives found it to have damage consistent with the crash.
It was then taken to the Randolph Police Department and impounded.
The registered owner and alleged driver, identified only as a 29-year-old man, turned himself in on Sunday morning and has been charged with Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle; Leaving the Scene of an Accident with Property Damage; and Negligent Operation of a Motor Vehicle.
The original Randolph Police Officer was inside the police cruiser when it was struck and he was evaluated at the scene and declined further treatment.
