The MBTA announced some upcoming closures for the Ashmont Branch of the Red Line between JFK/UMass and Ashmont Stations and the Mattapan-Ashmont Trolley Line.
MBTA General Manager and CEO Phillip Eng says the track is some of the oldest in the system and the closure will give them time to replace rail, ties, and ballast to improve reliability and reduce maintenance needs.
The shutdown will be in effect for 16 days from Saturday, October 14, through Sunday, October 29 and T officials say there will be free, accessible shuttle bus service for riders on the Ashmont Branch and the Mattapan Line.
Boston Mayor Michelle Wu says the city will be on hand to help to mitigate the disruptions this is likely to cause.
The line closure was announced on Thursday during a meeting of the MBTA’s Board of Directors where Jared Johnson, Executive Director at TransitMatters said that improvements are needed.
The MBTA says they will hold four open houses in September to discuss the matter.
