Just days before the new school year, the Brockton School Committee held an emergency meeting to appoint an acting school superintendent and to hire an external auditor.
Brockton Mayor Robert Sullivan, also chair of the School Committee, said the schools are facing a $14.4 million dollar deficit from the previous fiscal year.
Today, the committee unanimously approved the authorization to hire an external third-party investigator and audit.

On Thursday, School Superintendent, Mike Thomas, informed the School Committee that he would be out on extended medical leave.
Deputy Superintendent, Dr. James Cobbs, was appointed by a 7-1 vote to be the Acting School Superintendent. Ward Three member, Jared Homer, cast the dissenting vote.
Cobbs has been Deputy Superintendent since 2022, from 2019 to 2022, he served as Executive Director of Operations.
Sullivan says Cobbs is a military veteran, who has served in U.S. Army Reserve in roles that included Executive Officer and Major.
Friday’s special meeting concluded without public comment.
The Brockton School Committee meets next on Wednesday, September 6th. Sullivan says public comment will be held at that meeting.
