In Plymouth, the environmental release of radioactive waste water, by plant owner Holtec, from the Pilgrim Nuclear Reactor—the topic of a Board of Health forum on September 27th…
WATD’s Bobbi Clark has more…
Board of Health Chairman Barry Potvin says the idea of the forum was to insure that people who…
“…disagree with Holtec’s plans would have a forum in which to express their opinions.”
And one of those folks expressing an opinion: Mary Lampert of Pilgrim Watch:
“Holtec has been evaporating contaminated waste water into our atmosphere. In February, they installed heaters to warm up water so it could evaporate. There was no informing the public—they went right ahead.”
And Lampert adds, that evaporation…
“… is the most dangerous way to get rid of that water because the water is not filtered. The water contains all sorts of radio nuclides that are poisonous, living long lives—right up into the air—and then drops into the bay and then it winds up as a piece of fish on your dinner table.”
In a phone conversation with Holtec’s Director of Governmental Affairs, Patrick O’Brien, he shared information contained in an August 4th NRC inspection report, as follows:
“There are 2 reasons for use of heaters, and one is to improve temperature on the refuel floor. And, to improve the drying time for solid waste being packaged as part of decommissioning.”
O’Brien said further…
“…that evaporative releases are monitored, filtered and reported annually, and additionally evaporative releases have occurred continuously since the plant began operations in 1972.”
