Officials in Hanson say they will have to euthanize one of the bears seen roaming around town.
Hanson Police say that on Wednesday night the bear, known as Pumpkin, got into a resident’s barn and killed a goat.
They responded to the scene along with Massachusetts Environmental Police and say the attack took place despite the resident installing an electric fence and reinforcing the barn doors.
They say this is the second time the bear has attacked livestock in this area and that since the bear has gotten a taste for livestock he will have to be euthanized.
Officers were unable to put him down despite tracking him for several hours with police saying that they could not take a safe shot without the risk of endangering residents.
They also say the bear can’t be relocated.
Police say there is more than one bear in the area and that they “cannot and will not take out a bear just because it is in your yard.”
However, they say that if the bear is showing no fear of humans or is attempting to enter an area with livestock, please notify police immediately.
