In Plymouth, to ban the sale of nips or not…that question goes to the ballot in January. Such a ban was approved by Town Meeting last month on a 72 to 67 vote to go into effect on July 1st. But liquor store retailers did not settle for the Town Meeting vote and gathered the required number of signatures for a special election.
WATD’s Bobbi Clark has more….
At the Select Board meeting on October 7th, Town Clerk Kelly McElreath delivered the news that the required amount of signatures had been obtained and verified:
“They collected 1800 signatures which qualifies for a special referendum election. The Select Board voted to have that election on Saturday, January 13th 2024. “
There was some concern that the election will occur on the weekend that Martin Luther King Day is observed:
“Unfortunately, it does fall on the holiday weekend, however, we will have vote by mail ballots available for this election as well as in-person early voting.”
In order for this special election to occur, petitioners had to submit the signatures of 3% of registered voters and that had to be done ten days from the date of Town Meeting, which occurred on October 21st.
“The people that were opposed to the ban collected signatures of registered voters. The required number that was needed was 1459 and they collected 1810.”
The special referendum election will cost approximately fifty-seven thousand dollars.
