In Plymouth, residents will soon be adjusting to re-routing of traffic on Water Street to allow for completion of the relocation of the sewer interceptor pipe from under the harbor, to beneath Water Street.
This is necessary so that the Department of Public works has full access to the pipe. The $4.5 million dollar project and is funded largely by American Rescue Plan Act or ARPA funds.

DPW Director William Coyle:
“The sewer interceptor replacement project is going to be starting back up again next week. And the contractor, Northern Construction will be mobilizing on December 4th—probably won’t see construction the first day but certainly the beginning of that week we’ll see construction activities beginning.”
The sewer interceptor pipe is approximately 54-years-old and carries about 70 percent of the town’s wastewater. It’s necessary to inspect such a pipe regularly which cannot be done in the current location:
“Well, typically, we like to inspect our sewer infrastructure. The problem that we have is this pipe has two 45 degree bends when it was originally installed, so we cannot get in there to inspect it because of these angles—we can’t get the camera through the systems.”
Coyle says, with a start date of December 4th…
“…we anticipate the pipe to be installed and completed by the end of April.”
All businesses will remain open and great effort given to keep traffic moving:
“From Chilton Street to Brewster Street we’ll have one way traffic which will be in a southerly direction.”
