In Plymouth, democracy is alive and well so there will be a special election to determine whether or not to ban the sale of nips in town. This because enough folks wanted all the voters in town to make that decision—despite the fact that such a ban was approved by Town Meeting last fall on a 72 to 67 vote to go into effect July 1, 2024.
WATD’s Bobbi Clark has more…
Town Clerk Kelly McElreath:
“Our charter allows, if there’s enough signatures gathered to call a special referendum election for all the voters to make that decision. Enough signatures were collected, thus they’re having a special election on January 13th.”
In order for this special election to occur, petitioners had to submit the signatures of 3% of registered voters and that had to be done ten days from the date of Town Meeting, which occurred on October 21st. The required number needed was 1459 and petitioners collected 1810.
The Town Clerk reminds voters that the day of the special election, Saturday, January 13th…
“…is the Saturday of Martin Luther King Day weekend.”
So people who are planning on…
“….not being in town that day, please make other arrangements to vote. You have the option of voting by mail. We have vote-by-mail applications on the web-site.”
In-person early voting will be available…
“…that’s going to start on Saturday, January 6th, from 9 to 3, here at town hall. And then of course you can vote on Election Day. Polls open at the normal polling locations at 7 a.m. and will close at 7 p.m.”
McElreath advises voters in Precinct 11 of a change in voting location. Voting formerly took place at the Plymouth airport:
“Please note that this election and all elections in the future, you will be voting at Federal Furnace School.”
