Quincy observed the first night of Chanukah with a Menorah lighting Thursday night.
Mayor Thomas Koch kicked off the event, at the Hancock-Adams Common by discussing some of his ties to the city’s Jewish community.
During his remarks Rabbi Alfred Benjamin, of Congregation Beth Shalom of the Blue Hills in Milton, said that the shamash, or helper candle, which lights all the other candles on a menorah, shows us how we can help others find light in a time of darkness.
He also read a note he received from another faith community as they prepared for the first night of Hannukah.
The eight day observance began last night and will conclude on Friday December 15 at sundown.
