Sitting at 4-7 through their first 11 games of the season, a tournament berth seemed a pipedream for the Bob Fisher led Marshfield Rams.
The Rams would rattle off six wins in their next eight games, however, catching fire at the right time to lock up playoff eligibility with a game to spare.
When it finally came time for the tourney, Marshfield wouldn’t let the opportunity go to waste.
Ahead of a meeting with 25th seeded Lynn English, a recent back-to-back state champ in 2019 and 2020, Fisher was candid about the long odds facing his team. Even for the second-winningest coach in state history, knocking off the Bulldogs on the road would be a big ask.

Marshfield would weather LE’s early onslaught, however, and keep in contact throughout the game, even enjoying a brief second half lead.
With under a minute and a half to play, though, the Rams trailed by six. Thanks to buckets from juniors Jake Brilliant (28 points) and Giovanni Joseph (21 points), Marshfield was able to tie the ballgame seconds ahead of the final buzzer and force overtime.
Once in OT, the Rams rode the momentum, scoring first and leading at points by as many as four.
Finally, with 35 seconds remaining, it would be junior Matt Elwood (21 points) who hit the eventual dagger with a three-point bucket, leading to a 100-99 final and a Rams victory.
