In Plymouth, for months folks have been watching the progress of the renovation of Fire Station 2 on Samoset St. in West Plymouth—one of 7 fire stations in town and a facility that was originally built in 1975. According to Fire Chief Neil Foley, the living quarters within that station were really meant for more of a volunteer type of force—not the full time, career type of fire department that exists today. But the renovation is almost complete.
WATD’s Bobbi Clark has more…
Fire Chief Neil Foley:
“The station itself was in really bad condition, had a lot of asbestos, and roof leaks and there was a considerable amount of mold. You could absolutely smell that mold when you walked in through the doorways.”
But construction has been moving forward:
“We’ve knocked down the old living quarters attached to the garage and we’ve built a significant two-story addition—that really, it took us about 16 months, 17 months for it to complete. However those fire-fighters have been living in a trailer for about 3 years.”
So the progress report is… “…the fire fighters have moved back into the building, they are occupying the new addition and we’re going to continue with the construction project—that will be completed this spring.”
The Chief says they’re a little bit over on the schedule…”…by just a few weeks, however the project itself is on budget.”
So, how much did all of this cost?
“Overall, over ten million dollars for the entire project, which included 2 phases—the majority of it was funded through Town Meeting, but we also identified certain areas where we could use the ARPA funding for the town to offset some of those costs so that it wouldn’t be such a burden to the taxpayers.”
And when will there be an open house for the public?
“We expect to have a public open house this spring of 2024.”
