In Saturday’s annual town elections, Scituate voters overwhelmingly approved a debt exclusion override to build a new school while Hanover voters rejected a six-million-dollar override to fund the town’s operating budget.
Scituate’s override won by more than one thousand votes.
There were two-thousand-one-hundred-sixty-eight ballots cast in favor of the override while one-thousand-two-hundred-two were against.
The April twenty-ninth town meeting approved the debt exclusion to build a combined elementary school to replace the aging Cushing and Hatherly schools.
In Hanover, the override lost by more that seven hundred votes – with two-thousand-seven-hundred-fifteen voting against the proposal and one-thousand-nine-hundred-ninety-three in favor.
Hanover’s May sixth town meeting approved the override.
Town officials had said that the six-million-dollar override was needed to keep the current level of municipal services and school programs in place due to the loss of federal grants and rising operating costs.
