Crews in Whitman were called to the scene of a fire Monday afternoon.
Fire Chief Timothy Clancy says that shortly before 3 p.m. they received a call for a fire under the rear porch of a home at 135 Broad St.
Upon arrival, firefighters discovered that all the occupants had already evacuated the three-story, two-family wood-frame home.
Firefighters saw a fire under the porch which was extending into the house and stretched a hose line to the rear of the house and made a quick initial attack.
More companies arrived on scene and the exterior walls of the home were opened up and the remaining fire was extinguished with the scene being cleared at 5:19 p.m.
No injuries were reported.
Abington, Brockton, Rockland, Hanson, Halifax and Bridgewater provided mutual aid, while the Rockland provided station coverage.
The cause of the fire is under investigation but Clancy says an initial investigation indicates that the fire was likely caused by improperly discarded smoking materials.
