In Plymouth, just over seven thousand students say goodbye to summer as they greet the school year on Wednesday, but for almost seven hundred teachers, school began on Tuesday with a rousing teachers’ opening day celebration at North High School.

Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Chris Campbell says 45 new teachers were hired, but…
“…they’re not new positions; they’re replacing people who have left—either retired or left.”
This is Dr. Campbell’s thirty-fourth year in education and he has this to say about teachers…
“…they have the greatest job and the hardest job because they do all things, everyday for their kids. It’s a very fulfilling job to come in and knowing that you’re molding the minds of the future not only academically but socially and emotionally. It’s a huge responsibility.”
A responsibility noted by Tom Pinto, President of the Education Association of Plymouth and Carver who had some good news for teachers:
“Teacher contracts are settled and we received raises of –our top step teachers received raises over 13 ½%. We’ll have a ratification vote on September 18th to vote for the new contract.”
Some of those teachers and support staff were acknowledged with the highly sought after Dr. Gary E. Maestas Inspiration Award. They are:
Jennifer Ryan, Physical Therapist
Judy Duarte, School Nurse
Alex Cardozo, Math Teacher
Patricia Santana, English Language Learner Specialist
Assistant Superintendent Erik Cioffi talks about the staff member who were honored:
“The staff members that were recognized today give so much back to their school communities. We’re just very proud to be able work alongside of them.”
