Parole has been denied for a Brockton man who was convicted of killing both of his parents and his sister.
The Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office says that on October 9, 1993, then 15 year-old Gerard McCra, now known as Kuluwn Asar, argued with both of his parents.
Later that day he shot his mother, 36-year-old Merle McCra, in the family home, then shot both his father, 43-year-old Gerard McCra, Jr., and sister Melanie, inside the family car as he sat in the backseat.
McCra was found guilty by a Plymouth County jury in 1995 and sentenced to three concurrent life sentences without the possibility of parole.
His verdict was later affirmed by the Supreme Judicial Court.
However, in 2013, that same court also determined that statutory provisions mandating life without the possibility of parole for juveniles convicted of first degree murder was invalid and that juveniles must be given a parole hearing.
A previous parole bid was denied in 2019 and in their most recent decision denying parole the state Parole Board said that while they acknowledge, “the progress Mr. Asar has made toward rehabilitation,”, he has “further work to do in the areas of healthy relationships, Restorative Justice, victim empathy, and emotional awareness, including completion of Victim Offender Education Group.”
A review hearing on McCra will be held in two years, on May 16, 2026.
