In Plymouth, American Cruise line ships docked in the harbor 22 times this past summer for overnight visits. The ships average about 110 passengers per ship. And, most recently, the Select Board approved and executed a five year docking agreement with the cruise line company…this according to Town Manager Derek Brindisi.
WATD’s Bobbi Clark has more…
Town Manager Derek Brindisi talks about the terms of the agreement:
“The cruise line has agreed to pay the town three thousand dollars for every time they pull into port and dock here in town. They will be coming to Plymouth about 45 times in ’25 and about 45 times in ’26. We have in the agreement that they cannot dock more than 50 times in any one season.”
And every time a cruise line ship docks, there is another benefit:
“The revenue that’s going to be generated from the cruise lines docking here in town, two thirds of it is going to go into a special account just for pier improvements. And then the other one third goes back to the general fund. So, we’re also looking at it this as a revenue opportunity to make sure that that pier is always in great condition for all of its uses.”
However, there have been complaints:
“I’ve heard complaints that the passengers from the cruise lines are being bussed out of town, for example. I can tell you for certainty that there are two buses that the cruise line has. One bus goes to Plimoth Patuxet for half a day. The other bus goes to a route in the downtown area—picks people up over at the dock and the bus lets off on Court St., and towards the downtown area. So, those two buses do not leave the Town of Plymouth—one goes to the Patuxet, the other one stays downtown.”
