Crews were called to the scene of an early morning fire in Whitman.

Chief Timothy Clancy says that shortly after 6 a.m. Tuesday they received a 911 call reporting smoke alarms and a possible fire in a single-family house at 32 Fullerton Ave.

At first look there didn’t appear to be any smoke or fire coming from the house, but upon further investigation, firefighters identified a fire in a wall on the second floor.

The fire was quickly extinguished and no injuries were reported.

Damage to the home is estimated at around $50,000.

A preliminary investigation, has determined that the cause of the fire appears to be the careless disposal of smoking materials.

East Bridgewater provided mutual aid while Hanson provided station coverage.

The incident remains under investigation by the Whitman Fire Department and the Massachusetts State Fire Marshal’s Office.
