In Plymouth, celebrations of Irish heritage were plentiful on St. Patrick’s Day in the area—befitting the fact that some of the most Irish towns in America are considered to be on the south shore of Boston. And Plymouth celebrated as well. Maureen Haley of the Haley School of Irish Dance, and her troop of dancers, wowed the audience with their performance of Irish step dancing at the Center for Active Living, or CAL –the town’s senior center-on St. Patrick’s Day.
WATD’s Bobbi Clark has more…
Maureen Haley started dancing as a little girl:
”I was born and brought up in Galway City, Ireland and I danced from the age of 5—dancing and my Irish heritage is the most important thing to me, my faith came in there and I danced. That’s all I know is dancing.
So, Haley says, when I came to America in 1959…
“…I started actively pursuing a TCIG so that I could be registered with the Irish Dance Commission in Dublin and follow all of our rules, which I’ve been doing—oh, fifty years.”
A TCIG certificate is granted by the Irish Dance Commission in Dublin, Ireland.
The performances of Irish step dancing, such as the one on St. Patrick’s Day, at CAL, are important to Maureen Haley:
“It’s very exciting. It makes me very happy that we’re keeping our heritage alive.”
