BOURNE, MA – On the 7-year anniversary of the murder of Yarmouth Police Sergeant Sean M. Gannon and the shooting of his devoted K9 partner Nero, the community will come together to honor their legacy through a powerful act of compassion and service.

Cape Cod Veterinary Specialists (CCVS), in partnership with the Bourne Police Department and State Representative Steven Xiarhos, will host the 3rd Annual CCVS Canine Blood Drive on Saturday, April 12, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Bourne Police Station (35 Armory Road, Buzzards Bay, MA 02532).

“This is a deeply personal event for me,” said Rep. Steven Xiarhos, a former police officer. “On this solemn anniversary, we honor the memory of my fellow officer, Sergeant Sean Gannon, and celebrate the survival of his partner, K9 Nero—whose life was saved by the incredible team at Cape Cod Veterinary Specialists. This blood drive is a tribute to their bond, and a way for our community to come together in a meaningful and life-saving way.”

CCVS team members will be present to educate attendees about the importance of their canine blood bank, screen dogs for donation eligibility, and offer free physical exams and blood typing for qualifying dogs. These donations provide critical, life-saving blood for other pets in emergency situations.

Canine Blood Donor Requirements:

• Lean body mass of over 50 lbs, aged 1–8 years

• Spayed/neutered and up-to-date on all vaccinations

• On year-round heartworm, flea, and tick prevention

• No history of medical conditions or blood transfusions

• Comfortable being handled by medical staff

All dogs must be leashed or crated. While walk-ins are welcome, pre-registration is strongly encouraged:

“This event is not only a chance to help save the lives of other animals—it’s a way to honor the courage, loyalty, and sacrifice of Sean and Nero,” said Rep. Xiarhos. “We hope the community will join us in supporting this important cause.”
