‘Emotional Availability’ has become the buzz phrase lately. Our question this week is: “I’m curious to know how people define eligible? Is this the same thing as being emotionally available or is it something else? “

There are two distinct concepts.  Eligibility refers to a person’s external circumstances; simply put, the person is not in a committed relationship.  Emotional availability refers to a person’s willingness to invest in a relationship, better known as a “green flag”(we discussed this last week).

So what does being emotionally available really mean?  Emotional availability encompasses several key aspects.  They are self aware, communicate openly, have authenticity, a willingness to be vulnerable and emotionally intimate, handles conflict well and is not intimidated with difficult emotions, or working through challenging times, just to name a few.

Something important to note, when a person is unavailable emotionally, they may be a bit cagey, ultimately confusing their partner.  They are inconsistent and their behavior isn’t in line with what they communicate. It’s not uncommon to find yourself scratching your head right along with asking your friend’s opinions.  Always listen to your gut and remember this ladies, Audrey Hepburn’s favorite quote, “you can always tell what kind a person a man really thinks you are by the earrings he gives you.”
