In Plymouth, the Division of Public Health is warning that there are six ponds under cyanobacteria bloom and they’re sending out notices advising folks to avoid the affected ponds. So, is cyanobacteria visible on an infected pond and why should people stay away from such a pond?

WATD’s Bobbi Clark has more.

Director of Public Health Karen Keane explains how the problematic ponds are identified:

“When we see a bloom on a pond, we do a visual inspection.  If we believe it is cyanobacteria, we notify the state. The state then goes out and confirms whether or not it is cyanobacteria.  Currently, we have six confirmed sightings of cyanobacteria: Clear Pond, Big Sandy, Russell Mill, Billington Sea, Little Herring and Great Herring.”

And, these ponds should be avoided:

“People should avoid any area that has cyanobacteria blooms because if they have any ingestion or inhalation, that can cause gastrointestinal illness and with dogs, they can become very ill and even die from licking the cyanobacteria off of their fur.”

Is cyanobacteria visible on an infected pond?

“If you find anything that looks like pea soup on top of the water, I would ask you to notify our office and then we’ll notify the state to go out and take a further look at that.”
