The 2024 season didn’t end the way the Cohasset Skippers would’ve hoped.

After three straight trips to the Final Four, Cohasset looked dangerous entering the Division 7 playoffs before injuries piled up and derailed their run in the Elite 8.

In the end, the year closed as just the second sub-.500 season in head coach Pete Afanasiw’s now 20 year tenure.

This season, the Skippers return a bevy of talent. A senior-laden skill group leads a high powered offense. Depth on both lines drives a physical team ready to get back in the mix for a state title.

As always, title paths begin in the early weeks of the season.

Coming off a tighter-than-it-appeared loss to Norwell in Week 1, Cohasset played in front of their home crowd for the first time on Friday night.

Gaining a measure of revenge following a two-point loss to Silver Lake last season, Cohasset knocked off the Lakers 27-14 for their first win of the season.

Gus Greene starred for the Skippers, churning out a monster game on the ground to pace the offense. Quarterback Michael Wildfire was a key fixture as always, exploiting rushing lanes in lieu of a big passing night.

A collective defensive effort limited the Lakers scoring opportunities all night.

In the end, Cohasset picked up a crucial early season win amidst a grueling non-league schedule that features three Division 2 opponents.

On Sunday night, Wildfire and Greene, along with fellow Skipper seniors Max Monahan, JT McDonald, and Noah Rafferty, joined the Sports Exchange to discuss their win over Silver Lake and the season thus far.
