Some employees of the Whitman-Hanson Regional School District have received layoff notices.

Superintendent of Schools Jeffrey Szymaniak says that on Friday they issued Reduction-in-Force (RIF) notifications to staff members as part of the district’s plan to address a significant budget deficit.

Szymaniak says the notices were sent out following meetings with school principals and the district’s Central Office Leadership Team.

Those who received the notices include five teachers, two long-term substitutes, 11 paraprofessionals, and five non-union staff members.

Members of the Whitman-Hanson Education Association, staff members with professional status or seniority are being told they can transition into positions currently held by employees with less seniority or non-professional status.

Szymaniak says families will be notified directly if these changes have any affect on their child’s classroom.

He also said the district “remains hopeful that some positions may be restored in the future.”
