Over 100 patients were evacuated when a fire broke out in a Rockland nursing home.

The fire was reported around 4 p.m. Saturday in a common area on the third floor of the Webster Park Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center on Webster Street near Rockland Center.

Rockland Fire Chief Scott Duffey said that the sprinkler system contained the flames allowing firefighters to quickly put out the fire but heavy smoke permeated the floor.

Three-alarms were sounded bringing additional firefighters from several communities to the scene to assist in evacuating all 102 patients from the facility.

About a dozen ambulances were also called to the scene to transport the patients to other facilities.

Chief Duffey praised the quick work of the nursing home staff evacuating the 22 third floor patients to safety before firefighters arrived..

No patients or firefighters were injured

Water cascaded from the third to the lower floors causing damage and forcing the facility to be closed indefinitely.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
