Charges are being sought against an off duty Marshfield Police Officer who was involved in a serious head-on motor vehicle crash.
Chief Phil Tavares says Officer Richard Perry is on leave while the crash is investigated.
The incident took place shortly after 9 p.m. Sunday when Marshfield Police and Fire responded to a crash involving a Jeep and two other vehicles, on Plain Street (Rt.139)
Police say a preliminary investigation indicates that the Jeep was traveling westbound “at a high rate of speed and passed a town truck by crossing over the solid double yellow lines into the eastbound lane. The Jeep then attempted to pass a second vehicle, a Hyundai (Hon-day) Elantra, again crossing the solid double yellow lines and struck an eastbound Honda Civic head on. The Hyundai Elantra was also struck in the collision”
Perry was identified as the driver of the Jeep and he and the driver of the Honda Civic, were transported to hospitals with serious injuries and police say the driver of the Civic had to be cut out of the vehicle.
Police say Perry is being charged with Reckless Operation of a motor vehicle, operating under the influence of alcohol while causing serious bodily injury, 2 counts marked lanes violation, and speed greater than reasonable and proper.
A criminal investigation is being conducted by Marshfield Police, Massachusetts State Police and the Plymouth County Bureau of Investigation.
An independent third party will be conducting an internal investigation.
The Massachusetts Post Commission, which certifies, trains, and disciplines all police officers, was also notified.
