abington celebrates


It’s Founders Day weekend in Abington, a three-day celebration that starts Friday with a cookout from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the United Church of Christ on Bedford Street. Saturday the day starts with a 5k and kids fun run at Beaver Brook Elementary School and there will be a day-long Civil War encampment at Island Grove with Boy Scout demos and history tours of Island Grove throughout the day. There will also be a fishing derby for kids ages 6 to 14 from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Gates to Memorial Field behind the Frolio School on Washington Street open at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday for the big fireworks display at 9:30 p.m. There will be food, games, face painting and music to keep the fun going until the fireworks display. On Sunday, the town’s 306th anniversary, the day begins with a 10:00 a.m. firefighter memorial service at the flagpole at Island Grove Park, followed by a church service. Saturday, June 9:

Head to Island Creek Pond in Duxbury today from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. for a free, fun family ponding program. Designed for kids of all ages, 4 and older, this free event uses dip nets, microscopes and other tools to explore all things aquatic. You’ll join the South Shore Sanctuaries staff in search of tadpoles, water boatmen and other pond critters. Registration is required by calling 781.837.9400. Wear your waterproof boots or footwear! Head to the Open Barnyard at Weir River Farm in Hingham today from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. You can visit with Billy the goat, Nutmeg the pony and all the other barnyard regulars. Make a barnyard craft, brush a goat, pet a chicken and talk to a farmer. You can take a walk on the many trails and experience the beauty that Weir River Farm has to offer! Rain or shine! The cost is $10 for nonmember kids and $5 for member kids – adults admitted for free.

Kids of all ages are invited to Plymouth’s Main Library for a fun-filled day from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00  p.m. for the 7th annual Police Services Days! In the parking lot you will have the chance to meet and greet officers from all of the Plymouth Police Department units, including the motorcycle unit, the bicycle unit, the mounted unit, the marine unit, and the K9 unit. Get your fingers printed and don’t miss the K-9 and motorcycle demonstrations. Learn about all the ways the PPD keeps our community safe! This event is free and no registration is necessary. There will be free refreshments so come on down!

Are you ready for a reptile and amphibian ramble? Head to the Tidmarsh Wildlife Sanctuary in Plymouth today from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. to see frogs, turtle and toads – oh my! Geared for kids ages 6 plus, you’ll explore streams, loads and puddles in search of the reptiles and amphibians while you learn more about their lifestyle, their role in the Tidmarsh Wildlife Sanctuary ecosystem, and the threats they face. If you’re lucky, you may get up close and personal with some of these fascinating creatures.  The cost is $5 for adult and kid members of Mass Audubon and $8 for adult and kid non-members. Sunday, June 10:

Mud Fest! It’s happening in  Halifax today. The gates to Nessralla Farm in Halifax, right off Rt. 106, will open at 8:00 a.m. and the mud starts to fly at 9:00! Cost is $15, kids under 6 are admitted for free. ATV’s, crawlers, mud trucks along with food, music and vendors.

How about an Over the Fields and Through the Dell Scavenger Hunt at the Eleanor Cabot Bradley Estate in Canton for fun prizes and treats! Today from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. you’ll pick up your checklist, answer riddles, draw and look over and around the bend where treasures hide in the wilds of the Bradley Estate. Families with kids six plus. You start from the Main House and get to explore the Estate to discover items, either photograph then, draw them or bring them back. Cameras not necessary, but can be used. Other supplies likes bags, pencils and paper provided. The cost is free for adults and $5 for member kids and $10 for non-member kids.
