Weymouth Mayor Robert Hedlund

Weymouth Mayor Robert Hedlund is stepping down.

In a surprise announcement to Weymouth residents today, Hedlund gave no reason for what he called a “difficult decision.”

Hedlund has served as Weymouth’s third mayor for the past nine-and-a-half-years.

Prior to his tenure as mayor, Hedlund was a state senator for twenty-one years.

Hedlund said it has been a “privilege and honor” to serve the town and to improve the lives of residents and work with department heads to honor the town’s history, and improve schools, roads, and infrastructure.

Hedlund will leave his office on July 15th.

He said the timing allows the town clerk to schedule an election in November.

Town Council President Michael Molisse will serve as acting mayor.
