Lawyers for recently removed Stoughton Police Chief Donna McNamara are questioning the way in which she was removed from that position.

Leah Barrault, of Barrault and Associates, LLC, sent WATD News a copy of a letter to the law firm of Mead, Talerman & Costa, LLC which takes issue with an announcement made by the town on Wednesday naming Deputy Police Chief James O’Connor as Acting Police Chief.

The letter referenced Article 3 of the Town Charter and says that she is “not aware” of any votes being taken by the Selectboard regarding the appointment of an Acting Police Chief and wants clarification on who made the appointment and “ under what Charter or legal authority it was made.”

Barrault went on to say that she believes that McNamara “remains the Police Chief for the Town of Stoughton by contract, and she has not resigned, nor has she at any point voluntarily stepped down from her duties. She remains ready, willing, and able to resume her duties and to serve the Town of Stoughton as she has for over twenty-five (25) years”

WATD News reached out to both the Town Manager’s office and Mead, Talerman & Costa, LLC but have not yet heard back.
