In Plymouth, a Drag Queen Story Hour for kids took place at the library on Tuesday, to the delight of some and the chagrin of others.
Bobbi Clark has more:
Kelsey Casey is director of the public library:
“Drag Queen Story Hour is the name of the organization and they have chapters all across the U.S. and they partner with schools and libraries to do events like ours.”
Drag Queen story hour is a story hour like any other, says Casey…
“…but, you know, the participants just happen to be in—they’re dressed in awesome clothing—and their main message is to tell kids to accept themselves and accept others for who they are.”
A worthwhile message, but not everyone thought so…
“Yes, I think there were a lot of miscommunications about what the event was and what it wasn’t. It was absolutely a child friendly event. There was nothing vulgar, nothing explicit. It was just fun for everyone.”
Fun, except the protesters likely did not agree.
“I wasn’t surprised at the protest. Other libraries have hosted the event through the same organization and they had backlash. But, I was happily surprised that none of the protesters that came in person were from Plymouth—they were all from Cape Cod.”
Casey says taxpayer dollars did not fund this event:
“There are no tax payer dollars in this. The event was completely funded by the library foundation, and the foundation gets their money from donations.”
