Voters in Milton struck down the MBTA Communities Act Zoning during a Special Election on Wednesday.
The measure was approved at December Special Town Meeting and calls for more residential development in Milton after the town was designated a Rapid Transit community due to the Mattapan-Ashmont Line.
However, opponents gathered enough signatures to get it on the ballot and the measure failed with 5115 No votes and 4346 Yes votes.
State leaders expressed disappointment with Housing and Livable Communities Secretary Ed Augustus saying, “The Healey-Driscoll administration is deeply disappointed that Milton’s zoning plan was rejected. This is not only a loss for Milton but for our entire state, as we desperately need more housing near transit to lower costs. While we are hopeful that we can work with the town to put forward a new plan that would bring them into compliance with the MBTA Communities Law, at this time they are non-compliant, which means they will begin losing out on significant grant funding from the state.”
The vote was originally scheduled for Tuesday but was postponed due to a forecast of snowy weather.
