We are sad to report the passing of a longtime member of the WATD broadcast family.
Reporter Charles Mathewson passed away Tuesday morning surrounded by his family after a bout with cancer.
Charles was smart, savvy, and surprisingly sweet. He had a broad institutional knowledge of international, national and very local politics, people and situations.
Before joining WATD he had stints at several local newspapers, working as an Editor or reporter.
His transition to broadcast journalism, several decades ago, went smoothly as he had already started to sit in with us during political forums. He was a natural, with a journalism background and advanced degree work and experience in clinical psychology, Charlie was able to ask thoughtful and sometimes uncomfortable questions- he also knew who was sincere, who was not sincere, and who was really just full of it. Those he questioned usually knew it, too.
In the newsroom, Charlie always had a good perspective and suggestions on stories we covered, and was a good friend and mentor to many aspiring reporters.
He loved his wife, sons, everyone’s pets including his own, and reading and writing fiction and non-fiction.
He shall be remembered and missed by many people.
Rest in peace, Charlie. We already miss you.
