A fire has led to a temporary closure of the Weymouth Senior Center.
Town officials say that Union Towers II, located at 519 Broad St., experienced a 2-alarm fire on Sunday that was contained to a single unit on the fifth floor.
However, the fire resulted in the activation of the sprinkler system causing 32 units to be evacuated, leading to the displacement of residents.
The town’s Emergency Management Department, in collaboration with the American Red Cross, The Weymouth Senior Center, and South Shore Health, opened a shelter at the Weymouth Senior Center.
As a result all programs and services at the Weymouth Senior Center are currently canceled, including representatives from MASSPIRG, Veterans Service, and SHINE.
Those enrolled in activities will receive updates daily through the Senior Center’s Robocall System.
Medical transportation and shopping transportation will continue as previously scheduled.
