One man has died following a two-alarm fire in Halifax.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office says that shortly before 12:30 a.m. Monday they were dispatched to a report of a structure fire at 138 Holmes St.

Crews on scene and saw smoke and flames coming from the rear of the single-family home.

Firefighters entered the home and found one man, the sole resident, unresponsive inside.

They removed him from the building and immediately began lifesaving efforts before he was transported him to an area hospital.

That man later passed away.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office says the fire spread quickly causing a second alarm and firefighters were able to knock it down in about half an hour.

Two dogs were also found deceased in the home and Halifax Fire officials say one police officer was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

Hanson, Plympton, Pembroke, Duxbury, Kingston, and Bridgewater provided mutual aid.

The fire remains under investigation and the victim’s cause of death will be determined by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner although investigators say there were no smoke alarms discovered at the scene.
