A Hingham man is facing charges after a road rage incident that began over littering and ended with shots fired in the town’s library parking lot.
Sixty-year-old Steven License is being held without bail after his arraignment in South Shore Hospital on Friday on several charges including assault to murder, assault and battery with a firearm, and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building.
Hingham Police Lieutenant Steven Dearth said that officers were called to the Hingham public library parking lot on Leavitt Street for a report of shots fired on Thursday afternoon around 4:20.
Two vehicles, a car and a pickup truck, had pulled into the lot after a road rage incident a few miles away.
The female driver of the car and the male driver of the truck got out of their vehicles and had a heated verbal argument.
Police say License was a passenger in the car and fired two shots at the male as he was returning to his truck.
The man was not hurt but License was transported to the hospital for stress related symptoms.
The truck drove away before police arrived and License remained on scene with the female driver.
Police say License has a permit to carry a firearm.
The pickup truck driver later contacted police and told them that he was driving behind the car and witnessed the female driver throw a napkin out the window.
He followed them to the library parking lot where the incident escalated.
License is due in court on Wednesday for a dangerousness hearing.
