Marshfield voters defeated a proposed $7 million dollar override at Tuesday’s primary election.
The override lost by 742 votes.
There were 4,801 opposed with 4,059 in support of the override, or 54% to 46%.
Officials had said the override was needed to bridge a budget gap and cover increasing expenses.
In a Facebook post, school committee chair Sean Costello said that override defeat will impact services.
Select Board Vice Chair Eric Kelley had expressed opposition saying that town’s spending practices need to be examined and that residents cannot afford to pay more taxes.
He said school officials would continue to educate students to the best of their ability but with 75 fewer educators than last year.
Select board Chair Rick Smith said that outcome was a clear message of the nationwide challenges of affordability and inflation that while not created in Marshfield, the town will tackle the challenge locally head on through incredible fiscal restraint and discipline.
