The judge in the Lindsay Clancy murder case denied a defense motion Thursday to find her not guilty.

Clancy’s attorney Kevin Reddington argued before Judge William Sullivan on Tuesday that prosecutors had not offered any proof that Clancy had killed her three young children.

Prosecutors countered there was plenty of evidence, calling Reddington’s claim “laughable.”

During the trial, Reddington didn’t dispute that Clancy strangled the children at the family’s Duxbury home in 2023.

Instead, the defense sought to persuade the jury that the 36-year-old former labor and delivery nurse was not criminally responsible because of postpartum psychosis.

The trial ended in a hung jury on September fourth.

In his ruling Thursday, Judge William Sullivan noted that, for the purposes of his decision, he was required to analyze the evidence in the light most favorable to prosecutors — and that it was up to the jury, not the judge, to decide whether to believe expert witnesses for the defense who testified that Clancy was not responsible for her actions because of mental illness.

Sullivan wrote that “There was evidence introduced, both physical and circumstantial, that would permit a rational trier of fact to find beyond a reasonable doubt the elements of the charge of murder.”
