The City’s First Asian American School Nurse to Be Honored
As part of Women’s History Month and the nation’s 250th anniversary celebration, Quincy will be honoring 26 school nurses during the annual Remember the Ladies ceremony Saturday, March 28th.
The event honors the legacy of the city’s First Lady, Abigail Adams who called for people to remember the ladies.
Quincy officials say that today’s school nurses serve as highly trained healthcare professionals whose responsibilities extend beyond basic first aid.
They manage chronic illnesses, oversee individualized health plans, promote wellness, and serve as trusted resources for students, families, and educators.
The ceremony will also honor the life and legacy of Grace Eng Toy, a pioneering Chinese American nurse from Quincy who served as an Army nurse during World War Two.
Following her military service, Toy was hired as the first Asian American nurse by the Quincy Public Schools, breaking barriers in both military and public health service.
She passed away in 1998.
The event will be held from noon to 2 p.m. at the Quincy High School auditorium.
