Voters Keep Positions Appointed

Halifax voters rejected all four ballot questions at Saturday’s election.

The proposed one-point-five-million-dollar operating budget override was defeated by 867 to 714.

Also rejected were proposals to change the town clerk position from elected to appointed, making the treasurer-collector appointed; and also changing the highway department superintendent position to an appointed role.

There were three contested races.

Jody Goyette and Tara Tonello were elected to fill two positions on the elementary school committee.

Goyette led with 1,053 votes, and Tonello with 145 votes, fending off challenger Gordon Andrews with 111.

Holly Merry won a three-year term on the board of assessors beating Tammy Hillery, 838 to 482.

Joseph Fava won the water commissioners seat with 828 votes over Richard Clark who had 599.
