Wide travel lanes, a bike and pedestrian path, and separate spans will make up the new Sagamore Bridge.
Mass DOT released renderings of the new bridge last week that will replace the 90-year-old span that crosses the Cape Cod Canal.
The new Sagamore Bridge will be a twin-bridge – two separate one-way spans, one where traffic goes onto the Cape to Route six, the other that brings traffic onto Route 3.
Officials say this will eliminate potential head-on crashes.
The travel lanes will be 12 feet wide with an expanded breakdown lane.
There will be separate 14-foot wide pathways for bikes and pedestrians to protect them from traffic.
And the pathways will feature an outlook with a bench that faces the sunset.
The bridge will have a similar arch design as the existing span.
Construction on the new $21 million dollar bridge began in May with foundation work.
The new bridge that will be built next to the existing span, is expected to be open for traffic ten years from now.
Once completed, the existing Sagamore Bridge will be demolished and construction will begin on a new Bourne Bridge.
