Incumbent U.S. Senator Ed Markey toured around the South Shore yesterday, and stopped by the Harbor Park in Marshfield.

Markey, a Democrat, is running against Congressman Joe Kennedy, III in the September Primary.

About 100 people gathered at the Harbor Park to hear from Markey, who discussed his Green New Deal to provide jobs and address climate change. He said the Atlantic Ocean is the second-fastest warming body of water on the planet.

“It’s going to have a dramatic impact, this water is warming at a dangerous rate. Lobster need cold water, they’re moving north. The same thing is true for the cod, moving north. Moreover, the properties all along the coastline. They’re going to be in great danger,” said Markey. “That’s why the Green New Deal is so important. We can save all of creation by engaging in massive job creation, but we have to start it fast. That’s why the Green New Deal has to be on the agenda in 2021.”

A few state and local officials gathered to voice their endorsement for Markey’s election.

“He’s been a champion for coastal infrastructure, as you know we have so many challenges being a coastal town,” said Selectmen Vice-Chair Chris Rohland. “Senator Markey has always stepped up for Marshfield and helped us. He continues to fight for funds for our towns and other cities in Massachusetts and helps us get our fair share. He was the first federal official to come and listen and act to inform flood insurance.”

Andrew Kirdahy, a recent Marshfield High School graduate and class valedictorian introduced Senator Markey. Kirdahy said he researched and met Markey as part of a project for his AP Government class.

“He spent quality time with us in candid conversation. He was genuinely interested in hearing our points of view as new voters,” said Kirdahy. “We told him how much his work meant to us, and how excited we were as first-time voters to cast our ballots for a candidate who genuinely cares about the future and the youth of our country.”

Markey spoke about filing legislation to provide additional funding for small businesses and families to help them through the COVID-19 pandemic.

“One thing is we have to do is make sure that we extend the paycheck protection program, and make sure that’s in place, and make sure that it’s much more accessible to the smallest of businesses,” said Markey. “To those with five employees, ten employees. Not just those with three or four hundred.”

The Democratic Primary is on September 1.
