Middleboro Police Chief Joseph Perkins says one man is in custody following a shooting incident at a MassDOT public works depot.

Perkins said an extensive search took place, and 55-year-old Raymond Gibson of Falmouth was arrested around 11:30 Friday morning. He faces charges that include Disturbing the Peace, Discharging a Firearm within 500 feet of a Building, Discharging a Firearm near a Highway, and two counts of Malicious Destruction of a Motor Vehicle. He is expected to be arraigned today in Wareham District Court.

Police say he has a valid license to carry and that a revolver seized by police was registered in his name. Falmouth police have suspended the license pending review.

Around 9:05 a.m., Perkins says police responded to a Massachusetts Department of Transportation depot at 201 West Grove Street (Route 28).  About four to five shots were fired at the facility, hitting a window. No injuries were reported. Perkins said the shots were fired from the side of the road.

“He was armed with a silver handgun, it was reported that he ran into the woods. The location where he went into the woods, there’s a very large apartment complex with 240 apartments in it,” said Perkins. “We were very concerned with the safety and security of that complex. Additional resources and units were called in to secure that and set up a perimeter.”

State Police responded from the nearby Middleboro barracks, SWAT teams, and police from nearby towns began a large-scale search. Perkins said Gibson was arrested without further incident.

A Middleboro police officer noticed Gibson poking his head up while lying in the woods near where the shots were fired.

“I couldn’t be prouder of the work that Middleboro has done,” said State Police Colonel Chris Mason. “The chief has made his community safer through some really outstanding work that was done today in establishing that perimeter. We were happy to be a part of that and to assist the department in the ultimate goal of getting this person in custody peacefully.”

Mason credited the public for their assistance in the search for Gibson. A suspect description and location helped lead police to him. Police said a gun was recovered from the scene.

“He’s in custody and nobody’s hurt. I think that’s to the dedication of the police officers, to their training, to their experience,” said Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz.

Cruz mentioned recent incidents, such as last Saturday, where 11 men were taken into custody after an armed standoff with State Police on I-95 in Wakefield.

“I think their professionalism and their hard and tireless work to keep Middleboro and other communities in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts safe has really been something,” said Cruz. “I commend them for that.”
