The Braintree Electric Light Department has sold its internet business to Comcast.
General Manager Bill Bottiggi released a statement saying a study concluded the publicly owned power utility and broadband internet provider would need to make a “major, multi-million dollar investment in network infrastructure over the next few years to maintain quality of service.”
Bottiggi says this would have required a significant increase in customer rates.
As a result, BELD’s roughly 2,500 internet and phone customers will transfer service to Comcast, a transition that will begin later this year.
The sales price has not been disclosed, and Bottiggi says the deal will have no impact on BELD’s electric division.
