In Plymouth, the town already has 16 state granted liquor licenses. But there are those who believe the town needs two more retail liquor stores in the southwestern part of town, where the most growth has occurred, specifically Precincts 9 and 17. Selectman Charlie Bletzer brought this to the attention of the Select Board and they were in unanimous agreement. So Article 12, Special Legislation to Grant 2 New Liquor Licenses, Precincts 9 and 17 only, will go to Spring Town Meeting for approval.…

Selectman Bletzer explains that the reason for Article 12…
“is the growth of the town in the past 20 years. We looked at it going southwest. And I got some requests from that area about the liquor license—one store in particular, on the Little Sandy Pond Campground, has beer and wine and they asked about a liquor license and what’s the process to do that.”
So Bletzer checked with some folks in the Little Sandy Pond area, which is in precinct 9. The responses were concerning:
“They told me, we can get beer and wine in that store and groceries but to get liquor we go to Wareham. So I was concerned with losing commercial tax revenue to the town of Wareham and Bourne.”
So Selectman Bletzer says after unanimous Select Board approval…
“…the next thing is getting it to the Town Meeting. If Town Meeting approves it, then we have to go to the state to get the approval from the state. So what we have to show the state, and I think we have: is there a need for additional licenses?”
Going to the state refers to the Massachusetts Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission, or ABCC. One of the elements the Commission controls is the sale of liquor.
Article 12 goes to Town Meeting, convening on Saturday, April 6th at North High School.
